Short links for marketing: social, WhatsApp, ads and tracking

Marketers shorten links for two reasons: presentation and measurement. A clean link earns more clicks, and a counted click tells you what worked. Here is how to get both without spending a cent.

Why long URLs cost you clicks

A URL stuffed with campaign parameters looks suspicious and gets truncated in SMS, WhatsApp previews and X posts. Studies of message engagement consistently show cleaner links outperform raw tracking URLs. A short branded-looking link like l-k.us/summer keeps the message readable and the tracking invisible.

Keep your UTM tracking — hide it inside the short link

The right pattern: build your destination URL with full UTM parameters (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign) so Google Analytics attributes the traffic correctly — then shorten that URL. The audience sees a clean short link; your analytics still receives every parameter after the redirect.

Create one short link per channel (one for the newsletter, one for Instagram bio, one for the printed flyer). Your Link Us dashboard then shows clicks per channel at a glance, even before anyone opens Google Analytics.

One campaign, one dynamic link

Use a dynamic link for anything long-lived: the bio link on your social profiles, the QR on your packaging, the link in your email signature. When the campaign changes, you re-point the same link instead of hunting down every place it was published. The old posts keep working — they just lead to the new destination.

Measure without being creepy

Link Us counts clicks with date, referrer domain, coarse device type and browser language — and deliberately stores no IP address and no personal identifier of the visitor. You get the numbers that matter for channel decisions (which post, which day, mobile vs desktop) while staying comfortably inside the GDPR, with no cookie banner needed on the redirect itself.

Checklist for your next campaign

  • Build destination URLs with complete UTM parameters.
  • Create one short link per channel, with a title so you recognise it in the dashboard.
  • Use dynamic links for anything printed or pinned (bio, QR, signatures).
  • Watch the per-link statistics for the first 48 hours — that is when most of the signal arrives.
  • Re-point dynamic links instead of creating new ones when the campaign rolls over.
