What is a URL shortener and how does it work?

A URL shortener turns a long, messy web address into a short, clean link — like l-k.us/abc123 — that redirects anyone who opens it to the original page. Here is how it works under the hood, when it is worth using one, and how to create yours for free.

How a short link actually works

When you shorten a URL, the service stores your original address and assigns it a unique short code. When someone opens the short link, the server looks up the code and answers with an HTTP redirect that sends the browser straight to the original destination.
